Let me preface this by saying that I had been a Letterman fan for close to 30 years. I think it was my brother who turned me onto his show back in the early 1980’s when we got a VCR and started recording his show nightly. I liked his off-beat humor and admired his quick wit. I spent many years recording every one of his shows.
More recently I kind of got away from watching his show. It was a kind of on-and-off thing for probably the least 10 years or so. I’d start recording his show for a few months or a year and then stop for a while and then repeat the cycle. It wasn’t until the man’s blatant hypocrisy was revealed after his philandering exploits with his harem of youthful underlings that I started to lose my enthusiasm for the show and especially for Letterman himself. The years of making fun of the Clinton/Lewinski scandal kind of blew up in his face.
I continued to watch for a while just to see how the show would evolve in the wake of his own sex scandal. Sure enough, the Clinton jokes abruptly came to a stop. I guess it’s true about people who live in glass houses and their reluctance to throw rocks. By the way, don’t mistake me for a Clinton fan. That would be about as far from the truth as you can get before you fall off the planet and get sucked into a black hole!
After the sex scandal thing kind of blew over, I lost interest in Letterman and his show and stopped watching. At the time I rather doubted I would ever watch again and that turned out to be the case.
Another thing I had once admired about Letterman — besides his quick wit — was how he always left his political views out of the show. I often wondered if he was a standard-issue entertainment industry socialist or perhaps he was a conservative. I heard stories proclaiming both, but he was always too clever to let anything slip that would show his true colors. In recent years my dad had told me that he didn’t like the guy and thought he was just another limousine liberal. You were right, Dad.
Apparently age and too much time in front of the TV cameras takes a tolls on a man’s judgment. I little bit of the real Letterman peeked out from behind the facade a few years back. My memory is a bit fuzzy regarding exactly what he said, but I believe he made some rather vitriolic statements about George W. Bush and/or Dick Cheney. Again, don’t mistake me for a fan of either one of those slimeballs either. The point is that it was the first time I saw Letterman get serious about his feelings about policy and politics outside the context of a joke. It was obvious he was serious and beginning to reveal which way he leaned.
At that point my opinion of him started to evolve and I suspected that my Dad was right. The people you usually see attacking Republicans on TV are lefties and a little bit of pink was beginning to show itself around the edges of the TV character that is David Letterman.
Any lingering doubts I had about Letterman being just another entertainment industry socialist was smashed to smithereens like a Christmas ornament thrown from the roof of the Ed Sullivan theater recently after a bizarre and very revealing on-air diatribe the talk show host launched into while chatting with guest Brian Williams of NBC News fame.
Apparently, Mr. Letterman thinks that our luminous leader Barack Obama just isn’t appreciated sufficiently by the masses. Letterman cut loose with praise for Obama that must have had both of Chris Matthews’ legs tingling if he had been watching!
At one point Letterman actually says, “…Osama bin Laden finally is gunned down by Barack Obama displaying great courage…” Whoa! Did my ears trick me or did I just hear what I thought I heard?
Firstly, Obama didn’t pull the trigger on anyone. He supposedly watched from his safe, cozy “war room” with a bunch of his cronies as a Navy Seal pulled the trigger and displayed great courage by entering a compound that was likely to be occupied by armed lunatics. Fortunately for Obama, he’s got guys like this at his disposal who are more than willing to go out and take care of things like this and not think twice about it.
What the Hell was courageous about Obama saying “Get him!” What’s the risk? Pissing Pakistan off? Yeah, like they weren’t already doing it on a regular basis with drone attacks. Obama had way more to gain by killing Osama (or making it look like he ordered Osama to be killed) than he had to lose. Take a look at how he’s playing that hand now in an effort to make himself look like a hero in front of the election.
Letterman then goes on to ask, “What more do you want to lead your country than that kind of courage and that kind of intelligence?” The audience, the vast majority of them being as stupid as Letterman regarding matters of world affairs, responds with enthusiastic applause. Perhaps more of the studio audience at a Letterman taping comes from New York than I had previously believed.
Letterman then moves to take a few more swipes at Bush and Cheney for the wars (the only part of his diatribe I agree with) and declares that it, “Makes me angry that we can’t give this President anything!”
Letterman wraps up his praise fest for Obama by posing the question: “What more do we want this man to do for us? Honest to God.”
Watch Letterman’s embarrassing diatribe here.
Oh dear, where do I begin?
I suppose it’s nice to enjoy the finest dining, be wrapped in expensive clothes and fly around on private jets like David Letterman. Hey, things are looking pretty good from within the confines of Dave’s privileged world. Fortunately for him, his job hasn’t been outsourced to some funny man in India. Even if it were, Dave’s got no worries with the kind of bank he’s been making for decades. He’s way more than “set for life.” From Letterman’s perspective, life’s good. Damn good. Except for when he lost his special privileges for all those young office underlings, but he’s probably worked out a better deal for himself by now anyway.
Let’s step outside David Letterman’s Bizarro world for just a few minutes and into the real world. You know the one I’m talking about. It’s the world where Dad — and possibly mom as well — have lost their jobs and are wondering how they are going to feed the kids and pay the rent or mortgage.
Or maybe it’s the solider in Afghanistan that’s on the verge of a nervous breakdown while in the middle of his fifth tour because so many of his buddies have been blown up by IEDs. Yeah, that war. The one that’s going strong under the command of one Barack Obama. Gee Dave, we know it’s a war that the evil George W. Bush and Dick Cheney started but why hasn’t your hero Obama put a stop to it and brought the troops home? After all, Osama is dead (or has been for years) so we truly can proclaim “Mission Accomplished,” right?
That’s one thing the man could do for us, Dave. Don’t worry, there’s lots more!
Hey, he recently signed a new bill commonly referred to as the NDAA . You know, the one that the ACLU describes thusly: “On December 31, 2011, President Obama signed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), codifying indefinite military detention without charge or trial into law for the first time in American history. The NDAA’s dangerous detention provisions would authorize the president — and all future presidents — to order the military to pick up and indefinitely imprison people captured anywhere in the world, far from any battlefield.”
Sounds delightful, no? Thanks, President Obama! I’m guessing Mr. Letterman has no problem with it. As long as he isn’t placed at risk of being picked up and detained for enjoying office underlings. I suspect his contributions to Obama and other socialist politicians prevent him from losing sleep over things like Nazi-style indefinite detentions.
Hmmm, so what other wonderful things has Mr. Obama done for us? Oh yeah, there’s the broken campaign promise about mandating the labeling of GMO (genetically modified organisms) that big companies like Monsanto are using to mess with our food supply with no idea how it will impact the population. Here’s then-candidate Obama’s promise.
Perhaps his reluctance to follow through on that one has something to do with his obvious love for the likes of Monsanto and their ilk. Mr. Obama must owe that industry a debt of gratitude in light of the following appointments Obama has made since he took the Oath of Office:
Michael Taylor: Appointed as senior advisor to the commissioner of the FDA. Taylor is a former Monsanto VP. Read more at the Huffington Post (a top Obama cheerleader, by the way!)
Elena Kagan: Obama Supreme Court appointment. As President Obama’s Solicitor General, Kagan took Monsanto’s side against organic farmers in the Roundup Ready alfalfa case.
Tom Vilsack: Obama’s USDA Secretary. Vilsack was a leading advocate for Monsanto, genetic engineering, and factory farming.
Obama was a key player behind the big bailouts that funneled billions of dollars to save big banks from their own greed and stupidity. “Too big to fail” consumer favorites like Bank of America, Citibank, J.P. Morgan Chase and Wells Fargo (and many more) were saved with massive infusions of government money, leaving many struggling Americans wondering where their bailout was.
I could go on, oh believe me I could go on, but the fact of the matter is that I’ve already spent too much time on this. I actually have to get back to doing work that helps keep food on the table.
In closing, let me get back to David Letterman’s question. What more do we want this man to do for us?
At this point I guess I’d be happy if he doesn’t send storm troopers out to arrest, detain or just shoot me.
How’s that for a start?
