So the media is at it again. Come to think of it, I guess they never stop.
They were beating the drum once again to the tune of “Guns bad! Be afraid of guns!” last week here in South Carolina because a few absent-minded folks forgot that their handguns were in their carry-on bags when they were trying to board a flight.
Our local media here has jumped on this story with both feet and want us all to know how scary it is. It was one of the first stories they reported one evening late last week on at least one of our local TV stations.
And even more terrifying is the fact that the TSA discovered more firearms in carry-on bags last year than they did during 2022! Heaven help us all, the end is surely here!
I guess we are all supposed to be concerned and feeling “unsafe” when we fly but there was one key thing I noticed that was missing from these stories. Not one of them mentioned anything about anyone being arrested after the ever-vigilant and no doubt highly-trained TSA discovered a firearm in their carry-on bag.
And that can only mean that they were just average, everyday, law-abiding citizens who owned guns legally and just were a bit forgetful about leaving a handgun in their carry-on bag. If any one of them was a convicted felon or was a suspected terrorist, the talking heads on the news would have been hyperventilating over it for days.
The media’s bread and butter is drama and hype because they know that’s what keeps people tuned in. This is their effort to turn yet another yawn-inducing story into something more sensational.
The useless Transportation Security Administration (TSA) managed to detect a few lawfully-owned guns and probably missed a whole lot more that were successfully carried onto airplanes. I don’t consider that very news-worthy.
When they catch a known terrorist or violent criminal trying to bring a firearm onto a commercial airliner feel free to let us know because that’s actually news.
