It seems like we have reached the point where data breaches are in the news every day. At this point I wonder if there is a single person left in the world that has not had at least some of their personal information exposed by one of these failures. I suspect big companies are loathe to spend sufficiently on data security because it is not a profit-producing activity. I think their only motivation would be to protect their reputation from the bad press that a data breach would bring down on them.
However, with these events being so common these days, they would probably be justified not being all that worried about it. Where else would consumers go when so many companies have experienced these incidents? It almost seems like every company that has not been hit by one of these incidents will eventually have it happen to them.
In this case, non-mainstream news sources are claiming that a data breach has occurred that has leaked customer information from Sunwest Mortgage Company. According to the Sunwest Mortgage website, they “protect your personal information from unauthorized access and use, we use security measures that comply with Federal law. These measures include computer safeguards and secured files and buildings.”

Well there’s a statement that should inspire a whole lot of confidence, don’t you think? Thank God their “measures” comply with regulations established by our corrupt, incompetent clown show of a Federal Government. I guess now we have some idea how that worked out.
There does not seem to be any trace of news on this alleged data breach in the mainstream news as of this writing so I suspect it may be something that Sunwest Mortgage is aware of but has not yet figured out what might have happened. Perhaps they just do not want to talk about it and hope that nobody notices but it may be a little to late for that now.
According to the reports I saw online, cyber intruders were able to siphon off about 2 gigabytes of customer data that includes some six millions lines of information. The data allegedly includes names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, social media account names, information about loans and other personal information.
It appears that samples of the stolen data have been posted on dark web forums and as far as I can tell from the reports I have seen, it looks authentic. That data itself has been obscured but looking at the database fields that represent the type of data that was leaked leads me to believe that the claims regarding this data breach are legitimate.
Now I guess we can just wait and see if this story hits the mainstream news anytime soon.
