I started to wake up when I was in my late twenties but I admit that it took quite a long time to shake myself fully awake. What began my awakening was my life-long interest in firearms and how the right to own and use firearms was being attacked. Living in Massachusetts at the time, we were well ahead of the curve compared to many other states when it came to government efforts to restrict firearm ownership. It was clear to me at the time that gun control had nothing to do with public safety or a genuine desire to curtail violence. The real goal, which remains unchanged today, is to diminish the power of the citizenry and as a result, increase the power of government and the psychopaths that occupy positions of power within it.
By the way, I do not use the word “psychopaths” in a hyperbolic or non-serious way. I am completely serious with regard to my assessment of those people and it is far from a joking matter. Somehow, it seems like it is the most evil, dangerous and defective entities our species has to offer that end up with power and control over the masses.
Unfortunately for all of us, many people never wake up. They go about their lives from day to day believing that everything is fine and that the world is chugging along just the way it was intended to. These are people that believe Oswald killed JFK, the Covid jabs are safe and effective, serving in the military is actually serving your country and the mainstream media is telling us the truth.
Why some of us wake up and others remain asleep for their entire lives is something I may never understand. I know many people, including most of my relatives, that remain asleep and will likely never wake up. Most of the time I don’t bother trying to bring them around and make them understand the way things really are, mostly because previous attempts have resulted in people reacting to me as if I were insane. In general, people who are not awake do not react well to someone attempting to wake them. In the interest of preserving my relationships with these people, I no longer try to awaken people I know personally unless I have some indication that they might possess the ability to accept the reality of how our world actually works.
How do chickens relate to this? Well, we decided to get some chickens this year and raise them for their ability to supply us with fresh eggs. We use a good number of eggs (I eat them for breakfast every day) and we always buy organic, which tends to be a bit expensive (don’t get me started on how buying organic is a “lefty” thing, because it isn’t!). I also wonder just how “organic” the eggs we buy actually are. I suspect they are better than the conventional, non-organic eggs at the supermarket but are they really everything the package claims they are? Are there really gigantic organic egg farms that are willing to put in all the extra time, effort and expense required to actually keep their chickens outside in a pasture much of the time and make sure they only eat organic food? I cannot help but have doubts about all of that.
With our own chickens we will know exactly how they are raised, what they are fed, how frequently they free-range and how they are treated. Plus, it seemed like kind of a fun thing to do and a lot of people where we live are doing it, so why not?
In my mind, being awake means that someone is far more likely to be somewhat of a prepper and that surely applies in my case. I am a long way off from a hardcore prepper but I do believe that some basic preparations for difficult times is an excellent idea. Unlike my normie (still sleeping) friends, I believe it is possible that we might some day find ourselves in what preppers refer to as a SHTF scenario. While they cannot comprehend how the electrical grid could actually go down for an extended period of time some day (perhaps the recent solar storm could provide a clue), I believe that it’s something that might actually happen some day and chickens seemed like a good addition to my modest prepper plan. I figure that as long as I can find a way to keep them fed (free-ranging for bugs and other naturally-occurring nourishment), they will keep us fed by providing us with eggs.
Having researched the idea of raising chickens before we took the plunge, I learned that raising them from baby chicks would enable us to develop a better and more trust-based relationship with them. That made sense to me so we decided to order our chicks online from a well-known and reputable hatchery. So far things have worked out very well. The chicks are about six weeks old as I write this and they appear to be very healthy and active. And they do grow as fast as we were told. They already enjoy running and flying (briefly) around the enclosed outdoor run I constructed for them and are starting to look a lot like smaller versions of adult chickens.
What I noticed recently about our chickens that ties in with the theme of this article is that some of them seem more awake than others. There are times when I will approach them and notice that certain individuals will display more curiosity and friendliness while others go about their business and basically ignore me. The curious ones tend to look at me as if they are trying to figure out what I am while the others seem not to care if I am there or not. As you have probably surmised, those curious chickens are the ones that I consider more awake than the others. They seem to be making an effort to make sense of their world and figure things out while the others just carry on like nothing is happening and not bothering to wonder about what goes on around them. Just like the people I know who are still asleep!
For the chicken people out there, I find that it is the Buff Orpington chickens that seem more awake than the other two breeds we have. Those are the Black Australorps and the Silver-laced Wyandottes. Those two breeds just don’t seem to care as much about the world around them and how it works. They occasionally display some curiosity about things but not as much as the Buff Orpingtons. If chickens could be preppers, my money would be on the Buff Orpingtons for sure.

Clearly the world could benefit from more people that think and behave like Buff Orpington chickens. Sadly, the vast majority of the population seem to have more in common with the Black Australorps and the Silver-lace Wyandottes. They appear to be content living their lives in the dark and presuming that everything in the world is fine and dandy.
I have long believed that it would take genuine hardship to wake those kinds of people up. When you think about what so many others in history (and around the world today) have endured as a result of wars, famine, natural disasters and other calamities, it becomes quite clear that we Americans are quite spoiled and have been for a long time. Believe me, I am not hoping that we have any true hardship coming our way, but I suspect a dose of it on a large scale would shake some people awake. Perhaps it would be more accurate to state that I hope it would shake more people awake.
Remember how things were right after the 9/11 attacks? Those of us that do can recall how the mood of the entire country seemed to change overnight. People were more patriotic and seemed to care more about the country and their fellow citizens. Groups that hardly ever agreed on any issue were united in their love for their country and actually seemed to stop hating each other for a while. For a while. That’s my point. How long did that last? Not long enough. It surely is a long way back in the rearview mirror at this point. These days we seem like we are more divided than we have ever been and it appears to be getting worse.
Perhaps most people who are not awake will never awaken no matter what happens. They just don’t seem to have the ability to comprehend reality. I’ve devoted some time to thinking about this and how it compares to a familiar object: A radio. Many of us had one of those little handheld transistor radios that were quite popular a few decades ago. If I recall correctly, most of them were AM radios and had no ability to receive the FM band. Some of them, however, could receive the FM band, which sounded a lot better than the broadcasts on the AM band.
I think of people who are not awake as being a lot like those old transistor radios that could only receive the AM band. The FM band is where reality is broadcast and they simply cannot receive it because they just do not have that circuitry as part of their “configuration.” It just isn’t there. It never has been and it never will be and as a result, it is just not possible for them to wake up. They will live their entire lives in the dark and believe things are the way they are supposed to be until the day they die. Unless the aforementioned hardship is visited upon them at some point and manages to shake them from their long slumber. But at that point it may be too late for them and for all of us.
Perhaps it’s time to go out and visit with the chickens for a while.
